Grounding Through the Shift: 4 Seasonal Habits for Energy, Warmth, and Balance

November has a way of shifting our momentum. As the daylight hours shorten and calendar invites pile up ahead of the holiday season, it’s easy for workout routines to slide and energy levels to dip.

At Aspen Fitness & Nutrition and Aspen Fitness Yoga, we view November not as a month to "push harder," but as an invitation to realign. By pairing nourishing autumn foods with mindful movement, restorative yoga, and meditation, you can build a stable foundation that carries you through the end of the year feeling grounded and energized.

Here are four simple, impactful ways to keep your body and mind centered this month—all on your own time, right from home.

1. Upgrade Your Winter Warmth with Seasonal Whole Foods

When temperatures drop, our bodies naturally crave heartier, warming foods. Instead of fighting those cravings, honor them by choosing nutrient-dense autumn produce.

Root vegetables (sweet potatoes, carrots, beets) and winter squashes (butternut, acorn) are rich in complex carbohydrates that provide sustained energy without blood sugar spikes.

Aspen’s Autumn Glow Bowl

Try building this easy lunch or dinner bowl this week:

  • Base: Roasted kale or warm quinoa.

  • Roast: Cubed butternut squash and red onion tossed in olive oil and cinnamon.

  • Protein: Grilled chicken breast, roasted chickpeas, or pan-seared tofu.

  • Toppings: Pomegranate seeds, toasted pumpkin seeds, and a light maple dressing.

2. Transition from "All-or-Nothing" to Micro-Movement

Darker mornings and chilly evenings make leaving the house for a workout less appealing. The key to staying consistent in November is meeting yourself where you are.

If a 60-minute intense workout feels overwhelming, swap it for three 10-minute micro-sessions throughout your day. Roll out your mat for a quick core circuit between tasks, or take a brisk walk outside during lunch to soak up natural daylight and regulate your circadian rhythm.

3. Unwind Holiday Stress on the Mat

November kicks off the busiest time of the year. When life gets hectic, your nervous system craves down-regulation. Restorative yoga uses simple props—like bed pillows or folded blankets—to fully support the body, allowing muscle tension to melt away without physical effort.

5-Minute Reset: Supported Reclining Bound Angle (Supta Baddha Konasana)

If you need to release physical tension and quiet a busy mind before bed:

  1. Lay a firm pillow or folded blanket lengthwise behind your lower back.

  2. Lie back so your spine and head are supported by the pillow.

  3. Bring the soles of your feet together and let your knees gently fall open to the sides (place extra pillows under your knees if your inner thighs feel tight).

  4. Rest your arms comfortably by your sides with palms facing up, close your eyes, and focus on slow, deep belly breathing for 5 to 10 minutes.

4. Practice Gratitude in Motion & Mindful Rest

November is National Gratitude Month. While journaling gratitude is wonderful, Gratitude in Motion connects your mind to physical appreciation.

During your next practice, pause when a pose feels challenging. Shift your thought from "This is hard" to "I am grateful my body is strong enough to explore this today." Reframing movement as a celebration of what your body can do changes your relationship with exercise entirely.

Complement your physical movement by taking time for quiet reflection. Settling into a brief guided meditation or relaxation audio at the end of the day gives your mind the space it needs to process seasonal stress.
